Thank you. I seem to have done something like that, by accident. Poking around Google's Help stuff, I saw a link to accounts.google.com. That brought up teh same scary password screen. I gave it my Gmail password and it opened https://www.google.com/settings/personalinfo which showed little info, and invited me to "Upgrade to G+"! Which was reassuring.
Then I tried gmail.google.com and it came right up as normal.
